As part of the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3), ARIES is excited to present its latest publication: “Artificial Intelligence technology for rapid natural capital accounting: The ARIES for SEEA explorer.”

Through our ongoing collaboration with natural capital accounting experts of the Statistics Division of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and National Statistical Offices (NSOs), this policy brief highlights how users in general and NSOs, in particular, can take steps towards compiling natural capital accounts rapidly by using the ARIES for SEEA Explorer.

After the adoption of the SEEA Ecosystem Accounting (SEEA EA) international standard by the UN Statistical Commission in March 2021, it’s of crucial importance to develop and implement a technological platform that is able to incorporate and integrate the latest data, models and understanding of natural capital accounting. As such, we describe the current Explorer features, its functioning and potential impact in order to support well-informed nature positive decision-making.

We hope that this brief will spark further interest on the part of new users and NSOs to use the ARIES for SEEA Explorer in their natural capital accounting strategies.
