The 12th International Conference on Environmental and Rural Development (ICERD12) was organized on March 5-6, 2021 by the International Society of Environmental and Rural Development (ISERD and ARIES was part of it.

During the online event, ARIES team member Professor Kii Hayashi from the Institute of Materials and Systems for Sustainability (IMaSS), Nagoya University, in collaboration with Professor Hitoshi Okazawa and Doctor Yoshitaka Yamazaki from Tokyo University of Agriculture led a special session called “Web-GIS based easy handling environment and sustainability integrated modelling.”

The side event started with a short-video introduction to the k.LAB software by Ikerbasque Research Fellow Stefano Balbi from the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3), followed by Dr. Yamazaki with a presentation on water and mini-hydro power analysis. Participants had the chance to see first-hand how the k.LAB software works and the multiple options it offers towards both accessing and running models on ecosystem services and more.

Then, Professors Okazawa and Hayashi closed the session by giving an overview of the potential use of the k.LAB technology for environmental modelling and presenting a demonstration of a Japan model, respectively. Most of the participants who attended the ARIES workshop – around 20 – not only showed their interest in the ARIES approach, but also asked for holding a similar event in the near future.

Founded in 2010, ISERD has mainly focused on fostering rural development in developing countries, by promoting various practices related to sustainable agriculture and environment.

Find out more about how to get started with k.LAB with the video tutorial below, made by ARIES lead investigator Ferdinando Villa!
