On July 5th, ARIES lead investigator Ferdinando Villa and semantics expert Greta Adamo engaged in a stimulating discussion titled “The Role of Ontologies & Semantics in Integrated Modelling for Social and Environmental Sustainability” with the Semantics, Cybersecurity & Services (SCS) group at the University of Twente in the Netherlands.

The seminar aimed to share more in detail how semantic interoperability and integration can be achieved in ARIES and k.LAB by presenting its ontological and semantic developments. The core ontology of the system was introduced as well as the knowledge-integrated Modelling language (k.IM), which enables (i) the semantic annotations of scientific resources, (ii) the definition of concepts in the k.LAB worldview, and (iii) the activity of modelling scenarios.

This seminar proved to be an excellent opportunity to introduce the semantic layer of k.LAB to a panel of experts, leading to thought-provoking discussions and raising several compelling questions.

The event was realized thanks to the active involvement of Giancarlo Guizzardi, Renata Guizzardi, Tiago Prince Sales, Claudenir Morais Fonseca, and all the SCS members that took part in the event. We are looking forward to future collaborations! For a more comprehensive exploration of these topics, we invite you to read “The global environmental agenda urgently needs a semantic web of knowledge”.
