The Forum of Experts on System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA) Ecosystem Accounting took place on 7-8 December 2021 in a virtual format. Organized by the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the World Bank, the event was an activity under the Natural Capital Accounting and Valuation of Ecosystem Services (NCAVES) project funded by the European Union.

A wide range of stakeholders, including scientists, environmental economists, ministries of finance and planning, NGOs, and the private sector gathered to share experiences and best practices in applying and compiling ecosystem accounts, discuss how to operationalize the SEEA Ecosystem Accounting implementation strategy and the interoperability of data, and identify opportunities to mainstream this statistical standard into national and global initiatives.

During the event, United States Geological Survey (USGS) research economist and ARIES natural capital accounting expert Ken Bagstad introduced the recently released ARIES interoperability strategy for ecosystem accounting to 200 participants. Ken also highlighted the ARIES for SEEA Explorer’s potential for national statistical offices and scientific and policy communities around the world to compile more rapid ecosystem accounts.
