In a compelling side event held during COP28 in Dubai, environmental experts and statisticians joined for a thought-provoking discussion on the seamless integration of natural capital accounting (NCA) and climate change considerations.

Moderated by BC3’s scientific director María José Sanz, the session featured insights from Ferdinando Villa, Ikerbasque professor and ARIES’ principal investigator at BC3. Villa showcased ARIES for SEEA with an introductory video, highlighting its capabilities in generating NCA and promoting the interoperability of data and models.

Joining the discussion were an esteemed lineup of participants, including Kanta Kumari Rigaud, Lead Environmental Specialist at the World Bank, and Alessandra Alfieri, Assistant Director in the Statistics Department at the International Monetary Fund.

The event underscored the urgency of recognizing and accounting for the value of Earth’s ecosystems, especially amidst the depletion of natural resources and escalating threats of biodiversity loss.

Integrating NCA and climate change presents a comprehensive framework for navigating the intricate landscape of valuing, protecting, and restoring our invaluable natural assets in the face of unprecedented global challenges.
