ARIES took part in the ICES Annual Science Conference 2025, held on 15–18 September in Klaipėda, Lithuania. ARIES’s marine researchers, Beñat Egidazu de la Parte and Pearlin Sam Jinoj, presented research from the MARBEFES project, which is part of their work within ARIES and supervised by marine expert Marta Pascual.

The ICES Annual Science Conference is a leading global event for marine science. It brings together researchers, decision-makers and practitioners to discuss the state of the oceans, the pressures they face and ways to manage them sustainably.

At this year’s conference, ARIES’s work featured in theme session Q, “Marine biodiversity and ecosystem services for a sustainable future”, which included two studies:

  • Marine physical accounts, a method to track changes in the condition and extent of marine ecosystems.
  • Estimating mangrove carbon stock using Sentinel-2 Level 2A imagery,  a comparative study of Caribbean and Indian regions.

ARIES’s participation highlights its growing role in the marine and maritime field. The project shows how digital tools can support understanding of biodiversity and ecosystem services, critical for protecting marine life and guiding sustainable use of ocean resources.
