Through the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3), ARIES has joined the initiative and will strengthen the Coalition’s scientific and systems-analysis capacity.
The Coalition for Sustainable AI was launched in 2025 by the French Government during the AI Action Summit in Paris, in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).
The main objective of the Coalition is to promote the visibility of sustainable Artificial Intelligence to progress towards the UN Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals. AI can be a powerful tool to optimize energy grids, monitor deforestation, and accelerate the transition to low carbon energy systems, contributing to reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions and preserving biodiversity. At the same time, the Coalition aims to address the growing environmental footprint of AI itself, so that it is developed and deployed respecting the ecological limits of the planet.
A global network for sustainable AI
The Coalition for Sustainable AI brings together over 220 members across 23 countries, including representatives from governments, research institutes, NGOs, public organizations, start-ups, and large companies.
As sustainable AI initiatives continue to grow worldwide, the Coalition addresses challenges related to fragmentation, duplication, and inefficiency by creating a collaborative international framework for knowledge-sharing and coordinated action. Its impact is driven through participation in global AI and climate events, as well as through the promotion of knowledge-sharing initiatives, collaborative hubs, and best-practice guidelines for sustainable AI.
ARIES’s Contribution
ARIES is closely aligned with the Coalition’s shared vision of enhancing cross-sector collaboration model between researchers, governments, and industry, while also supporting the scaling of AI applications for biodiversity protection and climate mitigation.
The ARIES platform serves as a key technology for advancing international AI initiatives for the Planet, and by joining the Coalition, it helps ensure that AI is effectively a central component of the global response to environmental challenges.
ARIES will also attend the upcoming International Forum on AI for Ocean and Coastal Resilience in Biarritz (June 1–3, 2026), a key event in the Coalition’s ocean-focused agenda and part of a broader effort launched with support from international partners and co-steered with environmental and ocean governance institutions.
