Next July 20, 2021 from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm CET, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will hold a webinar featuring ARIES’ work towards enabling Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR), web-based data and model integration for sustainable ocean development.

Ocean accounting quantifies the benefits that oceans provide to society’s well-being through the integration of diverse data and models. This online session will be dedicated to describing how the ARIES modeling platform uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to foster data and model interoperability based on the FAIR Principles.

ARIES provides open-source software tools for (1) scientists to contribute data and models to a growing knowledge network and (2) non-technical stakeholders to access data and models in a user-friendly and transparent way via a web interface: k.Explorer.

This innovative approach for environmental sustainability through semantic web modelling has been already applied to natural capital accounting in collaboration with the United Nations and could naturally be extended to ocean accounting to support faster, easier, and more consistent compilation of ocean accounts.

The online session will be facilitated by Jeffrey Wielgus, Director of the Social Science & Performance Division at NOAA, and will have Professor Ferdinando Villa and Stefano Balbi from the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3), and Ken Bagstad from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) as main speakers and ARIES representatives.
