The Sector Hub, a subject-specific hub, is undertaking the development of ARIES for SEEA from this year onwards. It’s the first of its kind, joining other Regional Hubs of the United Nations Global Platform.
The UN Committee of Experts on Big Data and Data Science for Official Statistics (UN-CEBD) created the UN Global Platform with four regional hubs around the globe. The aim was to achieve a collaborative environment to work as a global statistical community. Along with it, the Sector Hub of ARIES for SEEA was created for the same purpose, and it is set to report to the UN-CEBD and collaborate on the UN Global Platform.
The Sector Hub is the result of the collaboration between the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the Statistics Division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3) and the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC).
Among the most important objectives of the hub is to expand the knowledge, technology, innovation and functionality behind the ARIES for SEEA application by supporting collaborative project activities. BC3, which will physically host the sector hub in Bilbao, Spain, will also support capacity-building and communication activities through the ARIES team.
The hub will provide a platform to promote the interoperability of data and models in the field of environmental-economic accounting and sustainability worldwide. It will also bring cutting-edge technology and data science methods in the use of AI and Big Data together, as part of an ongoing strategy in service of the SEEA community.
