ARIES will present its latest report, Global estimates of carbon stocks in the vegetation and soils of terrestrial ecosystems, at the upcoming Global Program on Sustainability (GPS) Seminar Series on 7 May, 15:00–16:30 CET by one of the authors Alessio Bulckaen, ARIES natural capital accounting expert at BC3.

The report provides one of the most detailed global datasets on carbon stored in vegetation and soils from 2001 to 2020. Developed for the World Bank’s Changing Wealth of Nations 2024 (CWON 2024), it improves how we measure and value nature, supporting better decisions on climate, biodiversity and sustainable development.

In his presentation, Bulckaen will outline the methodology, present key findings and explain how this data supports ecosystem accounting. He will also discuss its relevance for international targets, such as the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), and other multilateral environmental agreements.

Key themes in the discussion will include:

  • The knowledge gaps that must be addressed to improve global carbon estimates
  • The role of high-quality carbon data in advancing ecosystem accounting
  • How these insights can inform global goals, including the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF)

The GPS Seminar Series brings together experts using data to drive sustainable, inclusive and resilient decision-making. Register now to be part of the conversation and explore how natural capital data can shape global climate and biodiversity action.
