A key meeting in the framework of the LIFE PYRENEES4CLIMA European project has gathered between May 5 and 6 in the National Park of Ordesa and Monte Perdido (Huesca, Spain) relevant actors in the management of ecosystem services of the Pyrenees region with the aim of  advancing in climate resilience and sustainable development in the region.

The encounter focused on the importance of ecosystem services provided by the Pyrenees, such as water provision, air quality, and the economic and cultural benefits. These services are essential for the wellbeing of local communities and are increasingly recognised as crucial for long-term planning and climate adaptation.

ARIES, as part of BC3, will play a key role in the LIFE PYRENEES4CLIMA project conducting specific case studies to identify regional needs and standardizing available information to establish a methodological framework. Leveraging this data, ARIES aims to develop predictive models for ecosystem services.

Ecosystem services are crucial for the long-term sustainability and resilience of Pyrenean communities, supporting both the economy and public health. With ongoing land-use and climate changes, better management of these services is essential. Importantly, ecosystem service assessments should be used alongside other planning tools and with community engagement to ensure effective and sustainable outcomes for the region

Megan Critchley, ARIES coordinator of ecosystem service modelling inputs

Under the scientific coordination of BC3 scientific director María José Sanz as principal investigator of the project, ARIES team will develop predictive models, during the initiative to assess changes in ecosystem services, particularly concerning climate impacts on air and water quality. The efforts will focus on standardising regional data and methodologies, providing essential tools for informed decision-making and planning. These initiatives support the project’s wider objective of adapting to climate change.

We are proud to contribute to shaping effective climate change adaptation strategies for the Pyrenees, by fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing across sectors and regions.
